A Recipe to DIE for!
My best good friend Whitney sent me this recipe and I am actually gonna givita go this week. (It’s her Birthday today by the way!)
This is a recipe for homemade chocolate-covered cherries liquid laundry detergent. It, apparently, costs only 2 cents per load!! (maybe we should go ahead and eat it too…since it’s so cheap and all)
Here goes the ingredients: (totals about $7.00)
3 pints water
1/3 bar Fels Naptha Laundry Bar Soap, grated (a cheese grater will work)
1/2 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax (ah man! I guess we shouldn’t eat that huh?)
1 quart hot water
2-gallon bucket
Mix grated soap in a large saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on the stove over low heat until dissolved. (Do not allow to boil) Stir in Arm and Hammer Soda and 20 Mule Team Borax. Stir until thickened. Remove from heat. Add 1 quart hot water to 2-gallon bucket. Add soap mixture and mix well. Fill bucket with more hot water, leaving a few inches at the top, and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours, or until mixture thickens. Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load.
Whitney says I may not need fabric softener with this stuff cause it’s THAT GOOD! But that I should shake it well before pouring into the wash. This is so economical and all natural…right up my alley!
I know I have seen the Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda and 20 Mule Team Borax in the detergent section of Wal-Mart, and I think she said most grocers carry these supplies as well. Oh, and the bar of Fels Naptha Laundry Soap can be found at Harp’s/Pricecutter Grocery ( for you southerners) in the cosmetic section.
How about this for thoroughness?? The article Whitney, my good friend, found this recipe in referenced www.soapsgonebuy.com or (888) 858-SOAP! Man, she’s good!!
One more thing…here we are at our best friend’s Bridesmaid Breakfast that she threw for us in January.

You won’t believe this, but she had just had Annabelle 2 weeks before this picture was made!!
Amazing.
She is such a trooper!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY WHIT!!!
So, friends. Won’t you join me in some laundry soap-making fun? Let’s save some money together…we can be like bloggy best friends, right? I’ll keep my computer right by the stove so it’ll be like your right there with me every step of the way!!
It’s a date?

That sounds awesome! Let me know how well it actually cleans the clothes because I spend quite a bit of money on dye/scent free detergent.

Thanks for the shout out, Ang!! I love the pic too. Especially, the burp cloth under my arm!! Gotta love what motherhood does to your fashion sense…Oh and just so you and other readers know, the homemade detergent does have a slight scent to it, but it is just what comes naturally from the ingredients. I love the smell. Very fresh and clean smelling. Also, I think it cleans clothes very well. But really messy stains may still need some pre-treatment.

Did Whitney say how it is for children with sensitive skin?? Can it be used for them? One of my boys has sensitive skin with some excema.

She didn’t specify about children with sensitive skin, but I would bet (because of the natural ingredients) it would be better than other chemicals used in store-bought detergents. Not to mention, it’s dye-free…that’s a plus for sensitive skin people.
Titan has excema so we’ll see how he does when I try it out!

Its funny but I use this same recipe for our laundry soap and I love it, Another way to save money is to either dilute your fabric softener with white vinegar or you can do like I do and use straight vinegar the clothes are soft and cleaner without the build up from fabric softener.
