Towhead aka: blond baby

Tuesday 16th June 2009 - 6:01:11 PM

Whilst out and about, I am constantly asked, “where did you get these towheads”.  I actually had to Google that term cause I’d never heard of it.  Well, justincase you didn’t know, the word “tow” comes from the fiber of flax, hemp, or jute, prepared for spinning.   These fibers are light-colored, and so towhead can refer to someone with light hair.

Who knew??

So, my youngest three are apparently towheads.  Hee hee...I just like saying it!

And as far as where they got it from, check this out.

This is me as a 30 month old…

Look familiar??

And here’s Adia at 26 months old…

Some resemblance, eh?  Just a tad!

Back to the towhead business…

I was a blond baby towhead for most of my life.  It actually wasn’t until I was in about 11th grade that I really began to turn brunette.  When you know that about me it’s not too shocking to see 3 young bleach-blondes with 4 older dark-brunettes.

Although I most certainly do have dark hair in the winter months, or throughout the entire year if I don’t choose to dye it black (like the past few years), I get these really bleached out streaks in the summer months.  I’ve always thought it was weird until I realized that I was paying someone to foil my hair when I actually grow my own highlights!!  What a deal!!

Oh, you need proof?

Here I am in February of this year…with some left over foiling going on at the tips of my hair (left over from last fall that is)…

And here I am today, with my new FREE blond streaks!

Yes, it was a little difficult to get this shot, but you get the idea!

Yay!!!  I’m a towhead…sort of.

Now I fit into the club with my youngest three.  Now people won’t ask me if my children are adopted.  Now what’s with that anyway?

Just because we don’t all have the same hair color we aren’t related?

Hmmph…weird.  Guess that’s a whole different post.

I love my blond babies towheads!

My hubby was a towhead, almost white it was so light. My girls didn’t show signs of it but we are both brunettes and they are pretty blond right now.

Your hair looks great! How nice to have such natural beauty in those highlights!

Angie, I had cousins who I always heard the old folks calling towheads when we were little. I always assumed that it meant blondes who had REALLY, REALLY blonde (almost white, they’re so blonde) hair were towheads.

Eric and I always get the “Where’d those boys get that red hair?!” question because we’re both brunettes. But, like you with your blonde streaks, in the summer time my hair gets red highlights and Eric’s beard has red in it. I remember people asking me who I was babysitting for when Mace was a baby but I guess since I already had one redhead, when Farrell came along the question wasn’t so much who was I babysitting for as much as where did that red hair come from!

People who are REALLY observant and realize that genetics is a crazy thing, look at the boys’ faces, see their Hawaiian noses, look at me and see the same nose and know they’re mine! For those who really can’t see past the red hair, we go into the whole “Well, my mom is Hawaiian and I look like her but my dad had a lot of Irish in him and my husband’s sister is a red head…” yadda, yadda, yadda! :o )

It is kinda funny/crazy that different color hair equates “couldn’t possibly be related” with some folks!
