Single File Lines

Wednesday 12th August 2009 - 9:24:14 PM

It seems like everytime we go out to eat as a family we turn lots of heads.  I am not sure if they are ”ahhh, what a cute family” looks or if they are like, “what tha heck are they thinking” looks.  Todd loves it when people watch us get out of the car because he thinks it looks like a clown car!

We went to Old Chicago recently with my parents and brother.  A large group, I realize, but I think the entire restaurant stopped to stare while we formed a single file line to our designated table.  Which was about four tables put together!!

Again, I realize that we are a large group, and I’m all for people-watching, but it just makes me uncomfortable when people literally stop eating to watch our family be seated.  Not only did they watch us be seated, but they continued to watch as we got everyone’s menu in place.  Then, when I looked up to smile politely, these people quickly turned away as if they weren’t burning a hole through our heads with their laser-eyed stares!

Whaaa??

Can anyone explain this to me?  Maybe it was because Adia could only think about laying down on the bench seat so she looked drugged.  Maybe it was because Salem decided he wanted to eat the crayons and I decided I did not want him to eat the crayons.  Maybe it was because Titan was proclaiming to the world that he was going to be the one that got to sit by Grandma.  Maybe it was because Caleb was not saying a word and Regan had the number 198 written all over her body- I’ll get to that later on.  Maybe it was a combination of all of those things.

I don’t know.

It was weird.  That’s what I know.

I really don’t care if people are intrigued by our family.  If it’s the numbers that astound you, great.  It is pretty overwhelming to me at times too.  Although, we are not that large of a family.  Regardless, just say something!  A wave and smile would be good.  Even a “what a large crowd you have there” comment would suffice.

Something.  Please.

We aren’t freaks.  Or atleast I don’t think we are freaks.  We speak to others.

Okay, got that off my chest.

About Regan’s number tatts.  She was number 198 in the kid’s triathalon last weekend.

Yes, I said TRI-athalon.  Three categories.

The race included a 50 meter swim, a 2 mile bike, and a half-mile run.  The greatest part about the entire thing was that Regan decided she wanted to sign up THREE DAYS before the race!  Yep.

No training.

No preparation.

Nada.

You know, actually, I take that back.  She did swim back and forth in the pool a few times and we did practice going from the pool to the bike twice, but that’s about it.  I will say that Regan is quite the athlete though.  Out of about one billion kids she came in about 500,000th or something.

No really, she was right in the middle for her class which was ages six to ten.  Out of the ten year old girls competing she came in 17th out of 19.  One sidenote:  during the biking portion of the race her pedal fell off and that cost her about three minutes.  So, we figured out that if she had not lost her pedal she would have come in closer to 15th out of 19.

With no training and no prior knowledge of anything to do with triathalons…she had never even seen one…that’s pretty darn good.  We were just proud that she finished and then got to sport her 198 all day long.  (They wrote on the kids with a sharpie up and down their arms and legs so that each child could be identified in the pictures.)  She wore her number proudly all day Saturday and every day since- seeing as how it was permanet marker!

It was really a good time and she said she would like to train and be ready for next year’s race.  Go Rey Shey!

    Angie,
We get the looks too and I don’t get it. I really don’t feel like a large family but many times when we enter a room we feel much like the circus coming to town. I on the the other hand would prefer the silence to the comments. I find it difficult to put on a non-annoyed face when I hear the “hands full” comment or really any comment. The other day my friends boyfriend said to me, “Your electric bill must be high.” Puzzled I looked at him, then he said, “because that oven is always on.” I genuinely smiled just for originality.

I also think its great that you have a large family because there is no greater joy, blessing, or legacy then children, and its also great to live vicariously through you.
