I am not one to try to tell people what to do. Unless you are one of my kids, or if you have the wrong opinion of something, or if I disagree with you or if you make me mad. Other than that, I just do not partake in it.
I don’t. Well, not all the time.
Here is one of those times though, that I feel like I should say something because, well, because it makes me mad. What is this about? Giving credit. Not the plastic kind, the compliment kind.
It drives me absolutely crazy when someone takes credit for something that is not theirs to take. Or even when that someone finagles it to appear as if they did something that they did not do…and they know good and well they did not think of it first! Whatever “it” is.
God made some really creative people and they walk this earth making and saying some great things. The human mind is amazing and even more so when God-given gifts are being used. Just look around you at some of the things you have adopted from other people. Maybe it’s just that you saw something that someone else did, took that idea and made it your own. I think that’s great that we can adapt good ideas into our own lives and personalities. That in itself is a craft. My beef is with those that pretend like it was solely their idea. That is so demeaning.
People deserve credit, people!
Giving credit where credit is due is important to me. I see how it allows others to feel good about themselves and encourages more good ideas from that person. It would be like producing a music album, that someone else wrote, and only putting the performer’s name in the credits because they were the only person that was ever seen by the public. What??
NO! That’s not how it works!
Every person that took part in making that album deserves credit. Like at the end of a movie. What if it only listed the people who edited the film? Afterall, if it wasn’t for their expertise in slicing and dicing there wouldn’t be a movie. WRONG! It took lots of people to make that movie and they all deserve credit!!
The real reason why this is such a big deal to me is because I’ve fallen victim to this mentality before. Even lately. I once saw a very awesome decorating idea in the home of someone that I did not know very well. But I loved the idea- using a giant world map as a wall painting in her dining room. If I had used her idea to hang a world map in my house I would want to credit her if I ever received a compliment on that idea. Even if the person complimenting me did not know her. It was her idea!
One might think, if I can just pass this off as my own then I’ll get all the applause, and that’s probably true. But giving props to someone else is so honest. Of course there are situations when you have gotten inspiration from someone else and it’s not totally using the exact idea. I would say that is different. I’m really talking about something unique that someone else has come up with and that they deserve the credit for.
All that said…I would love to give credit to Mckmama for her great sidebar pictures. You may have heard of her. She’s quite famous in the blog world. Well, she was the inspiration for my sidebar pictures. I changed mine up a little to suit my taste and all, but the overall idea came from her blog. She is one of many creative and brilliant bloggers out there whom I love to glean from.
There ya go.
I’m turning over a new leaf- giving credit! Wanna join in?
