Band Nerds
You have seen that my kids can sing, but did you know they play instruments too?

We are a bit of a musical family- more than two generations back- so they came by it honestly.
My parents met in college, in the band. Dad played trombone and mom played baritone.
How dorky is that? Sweet though!
While I was young my dad played bass guitar in a honky tonk band. I remember two things about those days…cowboy hats and “Amarillo by Morning”. Still to this day I love me some steel guitar! Then as I got older my dad played electric keyboard for various churches that we attended and mom dabbled on the piano. I followed in their footsteps by joining the band nerds at an early age. Between singing in the church choir as a youth and with a special ensemble in my late teens, also playing flute in the band in school, I had my fair share of the treble clef. Even after I had kids I was a singer for six years on the worship team at our church. We actually made a CD that I don’t have any recordings of.
I’ll try to get my hands on those for ya…
…NOT!!
While I was being raised to love music Todd was being raised by a music fanatic- his dad. Todd’s dad was always playing guitar in a rock band, listening to classic rock n’ roll, and offering a life filled with singing and guitar-playing to his kids. Todd played guitar at a young age, he sang in countless plays with his sister (who graced the stage at our wedding and has a beautiful voice), he played with several bands throughout his school years who played at lots of different functions, and Todd was an awesome guitar player, singer, and worship leader on the same team I was on for six years. He has written songs, created so many awesome melodies, recorded riffs that would blow you away and he is amazingly creative overall!
I suppose our kids are bound to have some music in their lives! And look it’s already started.
Regan’s first piano recital was last weekend. She has been taking for a couple of years, but we missed her first recital due to a move down south. This time around, her instructor (who used to be my voice teacher) asked if I would sing with Regan while she played, but I convinced Caleb that it was his brotherly duty to take my place. I’m glad I convinced him…he did a swell job!
Caleb was born with great rhythm but he insists on learning guitar like his rockin’ dad. Fine by me!
Todd is convinced that Adia should play violin so we are starting early with this pretend fiddle that plays songs as you touch the bow to the strings. It’s hilarious to watch her “play”. Maybe someday she’ll get a for real stringed instrument and we can lock her in a closet while she practices!!
Titan is Mr. Drummer boy. He loves the drums and has his very own five-piece drum set. He actually can hold a beat, now that he can reach the bass drum pedal.
Salem is just the head-banger of the group. He doesn’t really have any skill other than twirling around until he falls over and nodding his head randomly. I suspect he’ll be a brass instrument player or maybe even a bass player. He just looks the part to me!
In case you were wondering, we do have another Christmas song in the works. Hopefully it will be released before Christmas this year, but I can’t seem to get these rears in gear. They would rather play Wii and watch “12 Dogs of Christmas”…which is a pretty good one by the way!
What’s up with that??
You’ll be one of the first to know if we do finish recording our second annual Christmas special.
If you liked Regan’s recital be sure to visit her blog and leave her a little comment!!
