Haircut How to

Thursday 18th February 2010 - 1:45:33 PM

I’m not sure you will find this useful. It might work better as a video (which I can attempt next), but the following is a tutorial on how to cut little boy’s hair with electronic clippers.

Someone brought it to my attention that cutting hair might not come as easily to some as it does others, and I just happen to be family’s hairdresser!   I have cut numerous friend’s hair, their kid’s hair, my grandpa’s, my dad’s, my own, and so forth.  I have never had professional training (as in certification) but I have watched videos and tutorials and I especially learned a lot from watching my own hairdressers over the years.

Here goes nothin’.

First you want to put the right guard on your clippers.  For longer cuts you will naturally have a higher number…the thicker the guard is the longer the hair will be.

Starting at the base of the neck hairline make rolling movements going against the growth of the hair.

So, up.

Like this.

From bottom to top rolling away from the head with each movement.

What happens as you roll out with each movement is, that the top hair does not get cut.

Don’t worry about the top section for now though. Just continue on around the sides and back of the head until all of the hair is the same length.

Now that the sides and back are even, turn off your clippers and get out your comb and scissors.

Don’t be afraid! You can do it!

Starting over the ears comb the hair down with your left hand (if you are right handed) and hold the hair down with your comb so that you can snip a straight line of hair.
Like so…

After doing that a couple of times to get it evened up, fold the ear down and use the tip of your scissors to snip whatever you couldn’t get in the comb.

Use the same technique for the base of the neck. Comb down and snip…come down and snip…all the way around the hairline.

I am not cutting Caleb’s top hair today, just the front “bangs”. For bangs, just comb it all forward and cut straight across the forehead. Caleb actually parts it or spikes it, whathaveyou, so it’s not really going forward like Lloyd Christmas unless he doesn’t take a shower (which happens to be more often than I’d like).

AHHH, much better!

Okay, next time I’ll do a video and show you how to buzz the top of the head and also how to cut it so that it’s not that perfect Clark Kent part-to-the-side look. Although, that’s Caleb’s preferred style. Maybe mom wants a little more Hip look for the boys.

I prefer mine to look like Gap models.

Can’t you tell?

Puh-lease post a video!! Do you cut Todd’s hair?
About every two months Stephen asks me to cut his hair, but I mess it up every time! I’ve stopped doing it and he hasn’t been able to find anyone to do it correctly, so he ends up spending $20 then coming home to buzz his own head. Ugh.
