“Your Song” contest

Tuesday 10th February 2009 - 10:18:09 AM

*Update*  The prestigious contest winner is….

Upstatemomof3!!!

“Hubby and I are such dorks. Seriously. “Our song” is “A whole new world” from Aladdin. I do not know who sang it because “our song” is not the one on the soundtrack it is the one actually in the movie (minus the screeching bird). It is the song we danced to at our wedding. It is how we feel for one another.”

Congratulations!  Your song is now on my Playlist!” (applause)

———————————————————————————–

Music is and always has been a huge part of my life.

My parents met in band at college for cryin’ out loud!  Isn’t that sweet…she played baritone and sat behind him (the trombone section) but they were both 1st chair.  It was love at first note!

Dating back to my childhood, when my dad payed bass guitar in a band that performed at rodeos across Texas, and I would dance on top of the old men’s boots to “Amarillo by mornin’…”, to making up gnarly dances to “Footloose” in my bedroom when I was 6 years old, to singing church-choir solos in “The Extra Mile” production, to signing up for the flute in 5th grade and remaining in band until I graduated high school all the while loving anything to do with dancing and music, and finally to marrying a rockin’ guitar player who was the perfect musician for the worship team I sang back-up with for 7 years.

With music in mind and in light of Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought it would be fun to reminisce about ”our song”.

Doesn’t every couple have a song?  The one song that spoke to the two of us, that embodied our relationship…

Or heck, that we heard on the radio so many times that it was bound to be played at a dance and we were bound to slow dance together and it would most assuredly become “our song”.

Oh and the golden rule, remember, was that you couldn’t have the same “song” with a different boyfriend that you had with the previous 15 boyfriends.  Hopefully Garth Brooks would write another love song that year, or better yet, Boys II Men would release a #1 and then Alan Jackson would redo it country style! (by the way, it was not okay to have a redone song as “your song” with a subsequent boyfriend…it’s clearly the same song even if it was R&B turned Country.  Same lyrics and music + different beat= same song, people!)

Todd and I have a great 1st song.  We got lucky…it’s a classic.  Also a great story to go along with it!

Thus, the story of how we started:

Todd fell head over heals in love with me as soon as he saw me walk into the Conway High School lobby on enrollment day, summer ‘96.  As I drove him and a friend of mine home that day, he was speechless…nervous because love had overtaken his thoughts!  (I think it would be best if no one asked Todd about this.  I’m pretty sure he doesn’t even remember…you know, because of the love-sickness.  wink-wink)

Anyway, the year progressed and I would see Todd in the hallways, at the ballgames and walking through my classes to get to his own.  All the while I knew how he felt about me (only because a friend of his told her friend who told her boyfriend who told my best friend who told me), he just wouldn’t act on it!

Until finally, in January of my senior year Todd called me up to see if I would sing with him in our yearly Beauty Review Contest at school.

Long story short…I said yes and we had an amazing two weeks of practice.

February 9th, 1997, Todd played his acoustic and I sang then that became our song.  To this day, anytime I hear “Unchained Melodies” it takes me back to that memorable time in our lives.  When our paths crossed and our lives would NEVER be the same.

The Righteous Brothers brought us together.  Thanks guys!

A funny little fact that I should add.  We first chose the song “I Finally Found Someone” by Brian Adams and Barbara Streisand to perform, but it just WOULD NOT come together.  Thankfully though because we didn’t get a chance to rehearse and thus didn’t find out that the lunch lady and her husband (who perform some love song each year) had selected “I Finally Found Someone” as their ditty for the evening.  How HORRIFIC would that have been??

Me and the lunch lady sharing vocal stylings.

Not cool.

Moving on…did you hear my new Playlist Player down there at the bottom of this post? (turn up your volume)  That is what this contest is about.

You leave me a comment with “your song” title and artist (I really need both, but if all you know is the title that should do) and I’m going to choose the best one to put into MY PLAYLIST!!

That’s right, your song could be playing right here for the world to hear!  Well, at least for the 3 people that read my blog…

Plus, I think we might get a good laugh out of some of those oldie but goodies!!

Just so you know, each one of the songs that I chose holds a special meaning to Todd and I.  They aren’t just random songs.  So after you comment linger a while and listen!!

I am taking out this playlist because it makes my blog load so slowly…sorry!!

Happy (early) Valentines Day!

Angie, I am ashamed to say that after emailing back and forth with Eric today, we have discovered that we don’t have an “our song”! We are both lovers of music and I know that this is why we’ve never had an “our song”. There are just too many good ones out there to settle for one!

Many years ago, Eric put together a collection of love songs on a CD for an Anniversary gift for me. Over the years that CD has become scratched up. Last night he was in here on the computer for hours. Turns out he was making a new love songs CD for our Anniversary Saturday! We even slowed dance to one of the songs last night in our kitchen after the boys went to bed! It had all of the old songs we loved on the first one with a few more added.

I guess the one song that we have both consistently enjoyed on the love song CD is “More Than Words” by Extreme (but “Cruisin’” the Huey Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow version and “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green” are close seconds for me)! After more emails back and forth, Eric and I both agreed that “More Than Words” is the one!

What a fun contest, Ang! BTW, my mom and dad’s “song” was “Unchained Melody” too! :O)

This is really strange, but the song David sang in that same Beauty Review that you are talking about is mine and David’s song. It is by David LaMotte and is called Lemonade. It is not a romantic song, but it’s really sweet and silly and just exactly like us. I love it! We also have other special songs, but that one is “ours.”

Music is very important in our house hold too. We all play music together on a daily basis.

    I love this topic!

Hello! I found you at the S.W.A.K. Carnival. I joined it too, so hopefully, you will find your way over to my post.

My husband and I have many songs we claim as our own. Yet, the one that stands out the most to me is All I Want Is You by Damien Lieth.

Well, the hubby and I don’t have a song. Sad, huh? We didn’t even dance at our wedding, so we don’t have that for a back up either!

I do remember my first “boyfriend” in 5th grade and I had a song… End of the Road by the infamous Boyz2Men LOL. We were serious.

Great post, I enjoyed reading your story!

Great story! I love Unchained Melody, but it is not “our song”. Ours is We’ve Got Tonight by Bob Seger

Great post, man the memories you brought back. But I got stuck at … you were six when Footloose came out?? Oh gosh, I am old. Let’s put it this way, I was a sophomore in college when that came out. Yeah, I’m old. But young at heart!

Oh, and I am a huge GB fan myself. Oh that man can melt the heart with his voice. Hubby and I don’t have a song. Sad, but true. We didn’t dance at our wedding (long story). And yet, we have a strong full marriage and a great life.

I loved reading about your story, and your parents. Have a wonderful day,

    Kiy

well, we don’t really have a song either. I guess I got a little burnt out on the “our song” thing in junior high and high school….with all the wrong guys! ;)
But I met my wonderful hubby in college. He is a very talented song writer and musician and so I always have loved listening to him strum his acoustic guitar in the living room as he plays me a new song.
At our wedding reception, he sang a little ditty that he wrote “Love Block 65″ which was really cute and fun!
So, no actual song, but music is a wonderfully fun part of our lives as well….just maybe in a different way.

Our song is “The Way You Love Me” by Faith Hill. My mom said it was indecent to play in church, however, so we had “I Will Be Here” by Steven Curtis Chapman at our wedding.

We have been talking this year about the fact that we never had an official love song…we had songs that we danced to at our wedding, which hold sentimental meaning to them, but weren’t exactly our song. Then I got an ipod for Christmas and was downloading music and I downloaded “Truly, Madly, Deeply” by Savage Garden and it took me back… to our dating days as that song was big then and I remember singing along to it in the radio and totally thinking of him and every time it comes on I can’t help but belt along and have this yearning to go slow dance with him. So, after much discussion, we have retroactively made it “ours.” Does that count?

Your story brings back alot of memories…I will have to ask Chris about “our song”. I am not sure that we have one-but we should. We’ll work on that! Good Valentine’s Day activity! (Side note: “But you say he’s just a Friend” by Busta Rhymes is a fun friendship memory that I thought of while reading your blog!)

Thanks for sharing. Music is a big part of our lives, too. Although, we haven’t ever really had a song. Any of the songs we listened to in the 80’s brings back wonderful memories.

Okay so I realize I am very late to this discussion post. However it looks like fun and I want to share our song as well. Our all time song would be… Count on Me by Whitney Houston and Deion Warwick.
    the words are….
count on me through thick and thin
a friendship that will never end
when you are weak I will be strong
    helping you to carry on
call on me I will be there
    don’t be afraid
please believe me when I say
    You can count on me!

Those words have proved true from the day we meet. Phil has alway been a shoulder to cry on, the brains for some papers in college, strength when I am weak. I have been those things for him in many ways as well. As I am typing I feel like crying just thinking about how by the GRACE of God we are able to support, love and nurture on another through all things. What a wonderful picture of Christ with His bride…I praise God I can see that in my marriage! Christ lovingly endures with His bride and so my husband does with me. The bride looks to Christ and pours herself out to Him, and so I do with my husband.

    Our family song is…
    I need you…. words are
    I need you
    You need me
We’re all apart of God’s body
    Stand with me
    Agree with me
It is His will that every need be supplied
    You are important to me
    I need you to survive.

And since I am that last one to post on this topic and not many people will read my response (the contest is over). I will share our family scripture 1 Timothy 5:8 Check it out.

Just know we are alos huge NEW EDITION, BOYS TO MEN, & Heavy D fans!
    ;)
