Homemaker Moments! (Selah)

Thursday 12th February 2009 - 10:58:54 PM

Do you want to be encouraged in your role?  Do you even believe that you are called to a role in your home?  Hang around and read some great stories of women who have fulfilled their roles this week!  You don’t want to miss out on…

What a week!!  I’m glad it’s ending with Valentine’s Day…that just makes it sweeter!

I had lots of sick babies this week so my mom skills were kicked into overdrive.

A few stats for you: Mon.-Thurs.  (remember we have a family of seven, so this could be a little shocking…or maybe not)

Dishes:  Average 3 loads a day = 14 total (last night it took me an hour to wash all the dishes and I’m the fastest dishwasher in the West!)

Kitchen floors:  Swept once a day (4 total) and mopped 3 times total- not to mention countless spills to wipe up!

Carpet: 1 rug vacuumed twice, and the carpet was vacuumed by Caleb once.

Laundry: 4 full loads Monday, 2 Tuesday and Regan did 2 Wednesday = 8 loads in 4 days (not to mention folding, hanging and putting away)

Picking up random stuff throughout the house:  Constantly, daily, hourly, and by the minute.

Meals:  I actually cooked EVERY SINGLE meal this week!  3 meals a day times 4 days = 12 meals (hence all the dishes)

Snacks:  Countless

Bathroom:  Caleb cleaned it once and I wiped off the counter everyday once.  Not near enough is the sad truth!

Bathing:  Adia actually had a bath everday this week (a new record), Titan had 2 baths, Caleb had 1, Regan had 3, and Salem had 1.  I won’t even bore you with how many I took…it’s really not even worth talking about….who really even cares how many

alright TWO, OKAY!  I only had 2 showers this week!!!  There.

I’m not proud of that.

Getting dressed:  I actually did put on clean clothes everyday this week!  (High Five!)

I dressed Adia 2 out of 4 days (one day she wore pajamas until about 3:00 and one day Regan dressed her), Titan wore the same outfit for 2 and a half days (he dressed himself those days and I did the other two), and Salem was changed twice a day for 4 days.

The big kids dress themselves- thank the Lord!  Although, Caleb did wear his “super suit” for 2 days straight.

Teeth:  That is Todd’s job- I’m sure it was done 3 times a day every day- he’s such a thorough man.  I need him in my life!

Beds made:  Regan does her own very well everyday!  The boys work together to make theirs (they share a double), I did Adia’s everyday, and I did mine twice.  This is an area Todd could work on a little bit, but if he never does I don’t care…I love taking the time (when I have it) to make our bedroom look nice and put together.

School:  Every day for atleast 3 hrs, except Regan was too sick today and Caleb really only did about an hour’s worth.  So, 3 hrs for 3 days = 9 hrs of school!  (Wow, that’s not near as much as it felt like)

Jumping on the trampoline that Todd and Caleb constructed Sunday:  Salem logged zero hours on the tramp. and I would guess about 15 hrs worth for the rest of us lunatics.

Well, we’ve been busy little bees this week, and my house is still a wreck!  But the lesson I’ve learned this week (and a lesson I have learned before and will probably have to learn again) is that I need to s   l   o   w     d   o   w   n   and savor.

“Selah” , as the Psalmist so punctually inserts it.

I had a few “Selah” moments this week.  One I wrote about Wednesday.  Then, one morning I woke up realizing that there was no need for me to rush around getting breakfast made by a certain time.  I decided instead to take my time getting dressed, brushing my teeth, and getting coffee.  God was available for me to talk with and His Word was “like honeycomb; healing to my bones.”

So, I’ll add that one here…

“Selah” homemaker moments:  Atleast once each day.

Outpouring of Scripture:  Once each morning for a total of 4 times.

Moving of God in my life:  Constantly!

The second morning I got up and committed “Selah” time look at what happened…(Excuse the bluriness- I had a little help from a not-so-experienced photographer).

I had 3 kiddos hop into my lap!!

Well, technically Salem was already there, but they hung out with me for about 20 minutes before breakfast!  That is unheardof in this family.  We’re normally on the go…go…go!  I usually usher those kids right into the kitchen to get started cooking as soon as they get out of bed.

I felt that “Selah” in my spirit- and I lingered.  I’m so glad I did!

After this week I commit to God and myself to slow down and let things soak in.  To put one foot infront of the other instead of trying to jog to the right, run back to the left and hurdle in between.  That’s silly.

SELAH…pause, take a moment.

Okay, Ang! I just had to take a minute to read your Homemaker Moment this week and after reading about the wonderful revelation (again) and the necessity for Selah moments, I decided to share my own H.M. for this week.

As you know, we do our “Family Night” Tues. night each week. This week it was my turn to plan the activity. After talking at some length with my better half, I decided a little “Family Survey” was in order. I made enchiladas (not nearly as good as yours) and typed up a short list of thought provoking and, as it turned out, emotion provoking questions.

We lingered over dinner then as everyone finished up, we sat with full tummies as Dad read the first question. The first question was an ice breaker as I knew the boys may have a little trouble getting into this activity.

The first question was really a statement: “Share one thing about yourself that no one else knows.” I really didn’t think we would be able to do this one as we are big time story-tellers in our fam and I figured we had shared everything by now but…boy! Was I wrong! This first series of answers took at least 20 minutes of time to get thru in between all of the laughter (that was so hard we were crying!) and shocked utterances of “Really?! You did THAT?!” And here we thought we had heard ALL of Dad’s stories!!!

There were other questions like, “What is your greatest fear?” (with answers ranging from the dark to turning out like Jimmy Stewart’s character in “It’s A Wonderful Life”…not accomplishing the goals you set for yourself).

Another question that brought surprising answers: “If you had 24 hours to live (not because you were sick but because you knew Jesus was coming back), what would you do with the time and whom would you spend it with?” Answers to this question were very surprising as well.

There was the “Describe your dream job/career” question/statement which brought some revelation about our children and each other. I found out that one of our sons would either like to be anything in the film industry…OR a Grand Master Thief (like in the “Ocean’s 11″ series of movies)….WHAT?! I also found out that my husband should either go back to school to become a teacher OR find a part-time radio DJ gig…both a far cry from his current career!

We saved the best one for last. Everyone was instructed to tell each of the other people in the room one thing they admired about them. AAAHHH!!!! This was a cooperatively sweet Selah moment for our family!

The answers brought many sweet tears, hugs, and fresh declarations of love for one another. It was, in a word, priceless. For me, the tears started with our 10 yr. old’s answers but the dam burst wide open when my 18 yr. old said that he admired my determination. My determination! Who knew he even noticed?! He said he knew that it took a lot of determination to make it thru those years when it was just the two of us! Wow!

Praise the Lord for Selah moments! They come in all forms and fashions and are to be savored to the last drop!

Well, I am off to enjoy an Anniversary weekend full of Selah moments with my husband!

    HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!

I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who doesn’t have time to shower every day. I try, but usually by the time I actually have time it’s bed time and I’m too exhausted. LOL

Way to go for sweeping the floor every day! I sometimes wish I had a dog to “pick up” after the kids in the kitchen so that I don’t have to sweep all the time. I guess then I would just be having to sweep up dog hair all the time. Oh, well… se la vie.

I love reading your moments Ang. And you are absolutely right- we should slow down in life and simply enjoy the blessings that are right in front of us! This is something that I have been thinking and feeling about our family time for a while now. Well, this past week, it began. :) The kids and I thoroughly enjoyed some quality time together this week- time that did not consist of packing or unpacking boxes, cleaning, putting things away, etc. But rather time simply enjoying one another. We made and painted birthday cards for daddy, we made cookie dough, we played with our play-doh, we played spider-man matching game, I started “playing school” with Stone in the mornings (that is what he calls it), we cuddled, piled in together on the couch to watch some Tom and Jerry…it was a great week together. Even better than that, it ended with some much needed family time. Saturday was the most wonderful day! Our Saturdays for some time now have consisted of me leaving and running errands while krys watches the kids and then me coming home and krys leaves to run his errands, or cleaning the house for a showing, or repairing something, etc. Well, this time it was different. It was Krys’s birthday Sat. My parents kept the boys over night Friday night so krys and I could have an evening out together to celebrate. We had a lovely time together! Then Sat morning, baby girl and I picked up the boys and we came home to decorate for daddy and make him brunch. So when he returned home from LR- we had things ready for him! We had biscuits and eggs and fresh fruit with coffee-yummy! Then we played, played, and played some more outside! The boys wrestled with their daddy in the grass and played chase with him. I took some great pictures of the three of them. Josie enjoyed soaking up the sun in her exersaucer! Then the boys helped me make some valentines cookies and that was great fun! After their naps, we made pizzas- theirs and daddy’s fav! And we ended the day with some blueberry torte with a few friends for a small bday celebration! All day long as I listened to the laughter coming from the backyard and spent the day with my family, I was overwhelmed with thankfulness for my beautiful family and my amazing blessings! I am truly not worthy to live this life.
It is hard for me to slow down sometimes. Between training, disciplining, playing with, feeding, changing 3 little ones diapers, cleaning, laundry, and the list goes on….I think, “there is not time to stop if I am going to take care of my family and take care of them well” I so easily get busy with all of the responsibilities and forget somehow that it is also a necessity and an honor and tremendous blessing to sit down and drive a car around the floor with my 2 year and 3 year old sons…as well as sharing some tummy time in the floor with my 6mo old baby girl. Oh, how I don’t want to look back on these years and have wasted this precious time with my children and my husband simply feeding, clothing, and tending to those needs….and not have truly enjoyed time with them.
This past Saturday was, in every way, the perfect day. Ahhhh….thank you Lord for those moments and days.

Accccckkkkk head spinning, vertigo coming, vomit rising…

All that housework you described at first is making me ill.

    EEEEEEK!

I think I’ll stick with one kid for now. Maybe add #2 next year.

    Maybe.

I will have to come back and read the rest of your post after I recover. ” )
